The desk

Field Buyers' Compass is a one-person buying-guide desk for premium camping gear, based in Colorado. The expensive stuff: the $900 tent, the $500 bag, the satellite communicator. We dig into the specs, the standards behind them and what long-term owners report, then tell you whether the price is justified. No sponsored placements, no spec-sheet "best ofs."

The name is the method: we compare gear claims with standards, specifications and long-term owner reports.

Affiliate disclosure

Some guides include affiliate links, marked as "Check price" buttons. As an Amazon Associate, Field Buyers' Compass earns from qualifying purchases. That's a commission paid by the retailer, at no extra cost to you. Links never decide what we recommend: picks come first, and a link is added only after we've matched it to the exact model named in the guide. We're adding links one guide at a time, and guides without verified links have none.

Prices and availability are set by the retailer, and sellers on Amazon can change. Before you buy, check that the listing says it's sold by Amazon or the brand.

Guides use specifications, standards and owner reports. We have not personally tested the products shown here.

How we choose

  • We don't lab-test products, and we never claim to. Each guide states how it was built.
  • Specs are read against the standards behind them (ANSI FL1 for lights, ISO 23537 for sleeping bags, ASTM F3340 for pads), so we can explain what box numbers really mean.
  • Examples favor long owner track records and strong warranties.
  • Reported failure patterns are considered when updating examples.
  • Guides are updated when specifications or reliable owner evidence change.

Privacy

We have no visitor accounts and do not sell your personal information. Google Analytics 4 and Umami analytics hosted at stats.williamlodge.com load on site pages to measure visits and page use. Google may process usage data under its own privacy terms; Umami is configured without cookies.

If you subscribe to the Dispatch, we store your email address, signup and confirmation dates, the page you signed up from and your IP address in a database outside the public website on our own server. We send the newsletter from that server; no third-party email service is involved. We email you a link to confirm before you're added, and every issue has a one-click unsubscribe link. To request deletion, write to hello@fieldbuyercompass.com. Outbound retailer links may let those sites collect data under their own privacy policies.
